Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)
Restoring muscle strength and function through gentle electrical pulses.
At Restore & Enhance Animal Physiotherapy, I use Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) to help rebuild muscle strength, improve mobility, and support recovery following injury, surgery, or periods of rest.
This safe and effective therapy uses gentle electrical impulses to stimulate muscle contraction, helping to maintain or restore muscle tone and function when normal movement is limited.

How It Works
NMES delivers controlled, low-level electrical pulses through small pads placed on the skin over the targeted muscle groups.
These pulses mimic the body’s natural nerve signals, causing the muscles to contract and relax — just as they would during normal movement.
This helps to:
- Prevent muscle atrophy (wasting) during recovery
- Increase circulation to support healing
- Improve strength, endurance, and flexibility
- Enhance neuromuscular control and coordination
Benefits of NMES
- Helps maintain muscle mass during periods of reduced activity
- Promotes faster recovery after surgery or injury
- Supports joint stability through stronger surrounding muscles
- Reduces swelling and improves blood flow
- Enhances rehabilitation outcomes when combined with physiotherapy exercises
Safe and Comfortable Treatment
NMES is a painless and non-invasive therapy.
During treatment, your pet may feel a mild tingling sensation and gentle muscle contractions — many animals relax once they get used to the feeling.
Treatment intensity is always adjusted to each patient’s comfort level.
When It’s Not Suitable
NMES is not used:
- Over areas of infection or neoplasia
- Open wounds
- In pregnant animals
- In animals with pacemakers or implanted electrical devices
